LOUIS WEINBERG

Friends –

As most of you know, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2014. It is a progressive neurological disorder caused by a decrease in the brain’s production of dopamine. There is no cure. It comes with numerous symptoms that vary from person to person. Among them are resting tremor, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, loss of balance, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, loss of taste and smell, insomnia, trouble swallowing, depression, anxiety, drooling, constipation, dizziness and dementia to name a few. While I consider myself in the early stages of the disease, I do experience many of these symptoms in varying degrees. I would describe them as annoying and frustrating but not painful. However, there is one symptom that is the worst by far………………fear! I fear what the future holds in store for me.

One very positive symptoms however, is perspective. Parkinson’s is helping me to understand what is truly important in life. I try to live every day to the fullest; to cherish family and friends; to travel, hike, ski & golf; to make new memories instead of accumulating more material possessions. My new motto is “I can make more money but not more time.” Don’t wait for something bad to happen to start living your life to the fullest and focusing on what’s truly important….family and friends.

Now for the good news. There is a tremendous amount of research being done in Parkinson’s world. While a cure is unlikely in the near future, there are numerous drugs and treatments in clinical trials that are showing TREMENDOUS promise for symptom alleviation and slowing of the progression of the disease. I am VERY VERY optimistic that within the next decade there will be new breakthroughs that will extend the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s Disease; people like me.

I guess by now you’ve figured out why I am writing this. I need your help so that the Michael J. Fox Foundation can continue to fund some of the remarkable research going on right now. Towards that end, on Saturday June 16th I am participating in the Tour de Fox, a 65 mile bike ride through three states to raise money for Parkinson’s research. One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to research. I’m hoping this research will result in breakthroughs that will extend the quality of my life and the lives of my Parkinson’s comrades. I am hopeful that these breakthroughs will enable me to participate in this bike ride for years to come!

Please follow the link below to go to my donation page. Please give generously. Help me and the approximately 7 to 10 million other Parkinson’s sufferers worldwide slow the progression and alleviate the symptoms of this disease.

Thank you and much love,

Lou
